Weekly Announcements

Week of December 6- 10

For those of us who live in the Upper Valley, the CBS story about Dan & Whits warms our hearts. It is wonderful to live in a community where everyone is willing to be part of the solution. (Robert Reich also wrote a nice piece about Dan & Whits, if you haven’t seen it.)

If you are looking for a way to give back to the community, you might want to spend time in our school as a substitute teacher. We have a sub shortage like most of the country. The lack of a qualified sub workforce can pose a real threat to a school district. Even if you have 2 days a month to devote to our youth, it could help. You would be exposed to the special energy that comes with the youth in our community and we would gain qualified substitutes to help keep our doors open and our schools safe. Consider it!

P.S. Please remind your kids that although we would like to see their whole face some day soon, we do not want a sneak preview of their nose! ;)

Essay Contest - Biographies of Contemporary Women in Mathematics

For the sixth year the Dartmouth Mathematics Department is sponsoring an Essay Contest on "Biographies of Contemporary Women in Mathematics."  They are very excited to share this program with the community and hope to receive some outstanding essays.  In the past they have had quite a few students receive recognition or win the national AWM Essay Contest!!!!  See the links to past winners on the website below.

This contest is open to ALL 6-8 and 9-12 students (all genders) in the Upper Connecticut River Valley, including home schooled students.  The grand prize will be an iPad for each of the two age groups. Depending on the quantity and quality of essays there could be additional prizes.  While the subject of the essay is "women in mathematics" the contest is open to all genders.

The deadline for submission is 2/1/22.  To go directly to the website for all the details go to: https://math.dartmouth.edu/~awmcontest/

Council Update - 12/8/21

Council members elected Josh Stearns (‘24) for the Council Rep. position on the Principal Search Committee and continued their discussion of the Honors Social Studies Resolution.

The core of this week’s Honors Social Studies (SS) discussion was debating the meaning of class rigor and how to best implement a system that would serve students at all levels of passion for the subject. The SS Department was in attendance to listen to Council’s deliberations, but especially student voices. An overwhelming theme of the discussion was addressing this question … Does class rigor mean more work? While most of the body agreed that an increased workload does not necessarily correlate to a deeper comprehension of a subject, proposing a solution has proven difficult, as this is part of a larger discussion about school culture and even the American educational system. An amendment was brought to the body, suggesting that an Honors designation for courses could be more beneficial than offering Honors USH, Am Gov, and G+G (all required SS classes). An Honors designation would maintain the homogeneity of the class (students are in the same classroom and learning environment), but would require extra work or the ability to demonstrate knowledge beyond the regular coursework in order to earn an Honors designation. The amendment ultimately failed, as it did not address the entirety of the initial resolution’s intent: to allow students who love SS to learn in a classroom with students who share their passion. Additionally, speakers posited that it could create an uncomfortable classroom dynamic and would ultimately be more work for teachers, who would essentially need to prepare for two classes instead of one. As of now, this has been the only proposed change to the resolution, but the body is still divided on the resolution itself. Read more in the Council minutes.

Please submit questions, comments, and feedback about Council or this summary through an anonymous survey. We meet from 11 to 11:50 am every Wednesday in the HHS Auditorium (vaccinated community members are encouraged to attend). If you’d like to learn more about Council, explore our website.

Youth in Action

The Community Service Team is off to a fantastic start. We have made welcome bags with baked goods, painted flower pots, and information about Hanover for the 18 new residents to Summer Park across the street from HHS, and made several yummy meals for the Upper Valley Haven. We could use help tomorrow with the Buddy Up Program, and Wednesday we will be cooking dinner at the Listen Center in WRJ, this event is fun for a whole family to take on, if you are interested in doing service work together! Sign up or email Beth for more information.
