Principal’s Weekly

Dear HHS Community,

Governor Sununu and the NH Department of Education have recently convened the School Transition Reopening and Redesign Taskforce (STRRT). This group will provide recommendations to the Governor and local school districts about the return to school in the fall. The link above will take you to additional information regarding the specifics, timeline, opportunities for input, etc.

The Hanover High School staff is also working hard to plan on the local level, in conjunction with Dr. Badams. At the moment the biggest challenge is the unknown.  The three scenarios that we will be ready to address are: a regular opening (we already know how to do this!), a continuation of remote learning or a hybrid combination of in-person and remote learning. I will share our plans as things progress so that everyone is involved and included. I will also be circulating additional feedback forms to all parents, students and staff - we want to learn from, and improve upon, this period of remote learning.

Similarly, the New Hampshire Interscholastic Athletic Association has also convened a task force to study options for the fall athletic season. Again, I do not yet have specifics but will share all that comes my way.

Important dates coming soon:

  • 5/26/20 - teachers in all courses will post all remaining assignments to Schoology
  • 6/5/20 - last day of school for all students
  • 6/30/20 - STRRT report will become public at or around the end of June

I hope this message finds you and your family well,

Justin M. Campbell
Principal
Hanover High School

From the Health Office

“Health-care workers have been on the job throughout the pandemic. What can they teach us about the safest way to lift a lockdown?”

This is the question answered by Dr. Atul Gawande, general and endocrine surgeon at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, in Boston. In this week’s The New Yorker he outlines a four-part strategy explaining why hygiene, distancing, screening, and masks could get people out of their homes and moving again once the virus is under better control. Not, yet, “back to normal,” but a much improved “normal” from the past few months. As people are beginning to tire of masks, constant hand hygiene, and are gathering in larger groups, the article is an excellent reminder of why we all need to remain vigilant.

Debate Team Coach Wanted

The Hanover High School Debate team is looking for a coach. They would be willing to attend 2-3 full day tournaments on Saturdays in the months of October to March. Tournaments take place around the states of New Hampshire and Vermont. They would also have to correspond with the debate leagues of both states to get topics and register teams. Additionally they would have to assist the captains in organizing and hosting a tournament at Hanover High School. It is a volunteer position. Please contact Emilee Jones if you are interested.

Students on Zoom (formerly Students on Stage)

Zofia Zerphy and Hannah Weintraub are the directors for the Students on Stage program this year. When it was clear that a full production on stage of the play they selected was a  no-go, they pivoted beautifully to embrace the digital format. They are releasing material every week on Friday. Here is a link to this week's installment. 3 short plays about life in the time of COVID 19.

The actors involved are Sydney Read, Katie Genzer, Julia Cook, and Sophie Caulfield.

Youth-in-Action

Thank you to the Youth-in-Action volunteers who have been continuing to serve the community. Diligent sewers have made 210 masks for DHMC. Several of those students are now working on gown repair. Both essential at this time.  Another huge thanks to those who have made meals for David’s House and the Upper Valley Haven. If your student would like to participate in these or to sign up to chat with a local senior, sign up here. YIA has been doing weekly meals for folks in need. If you would like to sponsor a meal ($75) we would truly appreciate it. Contact Beth about cooking or supporting this effort financially.

Hi! I'm Camilla and I am a junior here at Hanover High. I recently started an Etsy shop to help support the Upper Valley Humane Society where I volunteered at before quarantine. The humane society is looking for donations to help care for the animals during the Covid-19 pandemic. I'm selling different kinds of products that I sew (makeup bags, pencil cases, etc.) and all the money I make from my shop I am going to donate to the Upper Valley Humane Society in Enfield!

Musical shenanigans  to make you smile!

Submit a 10-15 second video to Casey McGuire of what you have been up to during quarantine to be entered into this raffle! It doesn't have to be of your face. It could be of your latest art project, cooking creation, pets, favorite hiking trails, or family! Please visit the document here to see the list of restaurants you can choose from. We hope you consider submitting a video by Friday, May 22. Thank you for participating! ~ Student Life Committee
