Weekly Announcements

Happy Friday!

Has it really been three weeks? It has been delightful to get back to the “regular” business of school. Staff and students have been working hard in their classes and during their extracurricular activities. We have a great deal to be proud of and it is often hard to remember how far we have come. Beyond the hard work happening in each classroom, our staff embarked on our Equity PD book groups, has been working to codify the decision making structure of our school, reviewed a potentially new staff evaluation system, and reflected on the opening weeks of school. Our students were also busy in their classes, on our playing fields, auditioning for our student run acapella groups, building the set for our fall production, and so much more. We are productive, busy, and hopefully happy and hopeful. Please remember if this is not the case for your student, there are many people who can help. Reach out!

Below is a note from Liz Murray about a recent TikTok trend. We only have a small group of students participating in this trend, but please have a conversation with your student about when and if to intervene in inappropriate behavior. In a way, it is nice to deal with a non-covid issue. Be careful what you wish for! We hope our collective conversations will prevent further damage to our school. As always, I love to hear about your dinner time conversations (i.e. dinnertime smackdowns), so drop me a line if you want to share.

A note from Liz Murray-

We would like to take a few moments to talk about a nationwide trend that has made its way to Hanover High School. The social media platform TikTok, has a trending challenge called “Devious Licks”. The challenge is to steal, damage, and show off items that are taken from a school. 

Most common items are soap dispensers, clocks, and wet floor signs. There have been other bigger items taken from some schools including microscopes and even COVID tests. 

It is important to know that stealing and defacing property are not only against our school policies, but can also carry financial and police consequences. 

This trend goes directly against our school mission statement and our goal this year of serving the greater good at Hanover High School. Even if you are a witness, a filmer, or a viewer who does not speak up you have violated our mission statement. 

We encourage you to not take up this trending challenge and to stop others who have. You can always come to speak with us in the Main Office if you have concerns. Our priority is protecting your learning environment.

Counseling Update

Sophomores: if you would like to take the PSAT on Wednesday, October 13th here at HHS, please stop in to the counseling office between 9/15 and 10/6 to sign up. There are a finite number of tests available for sophomores, and sign-ups are on a first-come, first-served basis.

Juniors: you have all been signed up to take the PSAT on Wednesday, October 13th here at HHS. If you do not want to take the test, please let your counselor know.

Financial Aid Night (Virtual)

The New Hampshire Higher Education Foundation will present a financial aid workshop targeted to seniors and their families who are applying to college this year.  It will be a virtual meeting just for Hanover High families, and younger students and families are welcome to attend as well.

Vermonters: An email will be sent out to all Vermont families in the class of 2022 with a menu of financial aid options presented by your state organization, VSAC (Vermont Student Assistance Association).  Please look for the email from Stacey Smith, Hanover High registrar.

Council

We had our fourth Council meeting of the year, accompanied by a lively question session and debate surrounding Weber Genesis grills. Following a windstorm some years ago, the old grill has proven to not work consistently, often taking 20+ minutes to produce a subpar hamburger patty. The Grill Allocation brought by Mr. Prince was passed, allowing multiple advisories, after-school groups, and staff members to safely build community and create special memories together. Additionally, we had a teachable moment about checks and balances! Read more in the agenda/minutes from the meeting. The "Bitesize" section on the second page contains an easy-to-read, condensed version if you're in a rush.

We are still looking for 3 enthusiastic community members to join our body as community representatives. Whether you're a parent, alum, or just a resident of the Upper Valley, we want you to apply! We would like passionate community members who are able to attend all of the Council meetings - participation and different perspectives are paramount in a democracy. We meet from 11 am to 11:50 am every Wednesday in the HHS Chorus room (vaccinated community members are encouraged to attend). Outing Club

The Hanover High School Outing Club is a student-initiated, student-organized, and student-led club that plans and executes a host of outings throughout New England. Using email and social media to disseminate information, the group has offered numerous excursions in the past six years that have included apple picking; hiking on Cardigan, Cube, Smarts, Mooselauke, Mansfield, and the Presidentials; skiing in Vermont; canoeing in New York; and snowshoeing around the Upper Valley. On the majority of the outings, the students provide their own equipment, transportation, and leadership—frequently there are NO Hanover High School staff on the outings.

Because of the student-centered nature of the group and the use of social networking, students find it easy to be involved and can participate as frequently or infrequently as their schedules allow. Any student with interest should attend the meetings during Activity period on Tuesdays in room 129 or email Sharise Meacham-Snyder, Celia Groves, or Jack Gardner. Parents with questions can contact Hal Bourne.

Mountaineering Club

The Mountaineering Club is a student-initiated, student-organized, and student-led club that plans and executes technical climbing outings, including vertical rock, vertical ice, and alpine climbing. On the majority of the outings, the students provide their own equipment, transportation, and leadership— there are NO Hanover High School staff on the outings.

Youth-in-Action

Wow, thanks to all who kicked off the start of school with Community Service, it has been fun to see new faces joining our dedicated returnees. Coming up we will be making dinner for the Haven, joining Hanover Rec at Fall Fest, and helping with the Red Cross Blood Drive here at HHS, families please, sign up HERE to donate.

You may have seen the signs around town about the upcoming Walk to End Alzheimer’s Disease. We are looking for a student or two to put together a team from HHS. If you are interested, contact Beth.
