Friday Update October 2nd, 2020

Friday Update

Happy Friday! I believe it’s been another great week at Hanover High School. I’ve had the opportunity to observe several classes this week and am pleased with what I see. Students are engaged in learning opportunities throughout the day.

Over the next couple of weeks, we will be surveying staff, students, and parents for feedback on various aspects of the school year, including the alternating block schedule and remote Wednesday. The alternating block schedule was a new initiative introduced to mitigate COVID risks and, along with a designated lunch period, is totally new for HHS students and staff. We will continue to assess the program and, if possible, make amendments for the second semester.

Lastly, I would like to remind everyone to stay vigilant in adhering to COVID protocols. We are very fortunate that there have been no reported cases at HHS. This is largely due to everyone doing what they need to do including wearing masks, social/physical distancing, daily attestation, and adherence to travel guidelines. I remain hopeful that adherence to these protocols will enable us to continue the in-person learning program. Please continue to reach out to our school nurses if you have any questions.

Thanks again for everything and have a great weekend.

Attendance Reminder for Wednesdays

Attendance is required for each class period on Wednesdays just like a regular school day.  When students are absent from remote learning on Wednesday, including partial absences for appointments, parents still need to contact the main office or the attendance line at 603-643-3431, ext 3535 as with any other school day.

Also, when a student experiences technical difficulties at home, the school needs to hear from a parent/guardian in order for the absence to be excused.

Thank you for your help in keeping accurate attendance.

Health Office Notes:

Please remember to report COVID like symptoms when making sick or absent calls and also any self quarantines due to COVID exposures. We report this to the NHDept.of Health and Human Services each day. Thanks!

Student Influenza Clinic:

There will be a drive-thru student influenza clinic in the Dewey Lot in Hanover (intersection of College St., North Park St., & Lyme Rd.) on Saturday, October 17th from 10 A.M. until 3 P.M. Please read and print the attached Parent Consent form and make two copies of it. Both copies must be signed and filled out before the drive-thru clinic.

If you are unable to print this form at home, we can provide a hard copy to be sent home with your child. It can be picked up in the Health Office at school by your child.

At the time of the vaccination, one copy will stay with you and one will stay with the vaccine clinic.

The vaccine is available to all students from both states ages 4-19.

Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns. Due to the COVID-19 Epidemic, it is extremely important to have a Flu Vaccine this year, to avoid overwhelming our local health care system. (The signs and symptoms of the Flu are much like those of COVID-19)

Do not return the consent form to the school. Bring it with you completed in the car.

Also please see the CDC Flu Vaccine website.

Remote Open House

On Thursday, October 8th from 5:30-7:30, Hanover High School will be conducting a remote open house for all parents and guardians. The open house is an opportunity for parents and guardians to meet their student’s teachers and get an overview of their respective class. Teachers will not be discussing any student-specific issues. Each class will be approximately 9 minutes long with 1 minute to transition to the next class. A detailed schedule with Zoom links to each teacher’s class will be sent out next Wednesday.

Notes from Tech

  • We have undergone several data integrations related to our new PowerSchool registration format and have made substantial changes to the way that we link Powerschool with School Messenger. If you are continuing to experience issues with receiving this and other communications, please contact the helpdesk. Thank you for your continued patience as we need to make corrections student by student.

  • Our long-awaited 2020-21 Chromebooks are to be delivered today! All 9th graders and new to the district students will be provided a new device as soon as they are accessioned and configured. When swap outs occur, we will need to collect the old device and the charger before issuing the new device. No time like the present to locate those cords!

  • PowerSchool tip of the week! When in the parent portal, click the tab labeled, “Grades and Attendance” to see actual grades. It doesn’t look clickable, but it is!

PSAT

The PSAT will be held on Wednesday, October 14 at Hanover High. All students who are not testing will have the day off. There are a limited number of tests each year, and juniors have first priority.

Registration for the PSAT is happening now. To sign up, students should bring a check for $20 made payable to Hanover High School to the Counseling Office. The deadline to sign up for all students is Thursday, October 8.

For more information about this test, check out the website for the College Board, or talk to your school counselor.

AP Exam Registration 2020-2021

At Hanover High School there are many challenging, advanced level courses, some of which are AP compatible.  Students who take these courses may wish to explore the AP exam option.  While Hanover High School does not offer AP courses as such, many classes may include preparation for the national AP exams, which test a prescribed body of knowledge and/or skills. Students are encouraged to ask their teacher if their course is compatible. AP exam offerings are on the back of this form.

AP Test Registration begins on Monday, October 5, 2020. Students should bring this form with payment to the Counseling Office to register.  Each test costs $95 and must be paid in full at the time of registration.  Make checks payable to “Hanover High School – AP Exams.”  Fee waivers are available for students with financial need. Full refund if the test is canceled by March 1. No refunds available after this date. AP Exams will begin on Monday, May 3rd, 2021, and end on Friday, May 14th, 2021.

Absolute Registration Deadline is close of school November 3  – no exceptions

Semester 2 Schedule

The HS administrative team will be beginning the process of creating a new schedule for the second semester. The new schedule will balance student requests for remote or in-person courses with available teachers. This will allow us to better predict enrollment in sections, traffic flow, transitions, and course offerings as well as create a schedule that better balances teacher prep time and instruction. We anticipate this process to take 2-3 weeks with two additional weeks needed before December break to troubleshoot individual student schedule conflicts.  Because of this timeline, families can expect to hear more about this in the next two weeks. We understand that plans and situations change, but we will do our best with the information we can obtain.

Youth-in-Action

Thank you to the crew who ripped up invasive buckthorn at Mink Brook and others who made the delicious dinner for the Hixon House. Awesome to see such enthusiasm for community service.

Coming up, we are working with Willing Hands, making pads for girls in Ghana, and dinner for David’s House. Sign up here if your student wants to join the fun!
